Living with type 2 diabetes means keeping track of several key numbers. Understanding what they mean empowers you to take control of your health.

HbA1c

This measures your average blood sugar over the past 3 months. A target below 7% (53 mmol/mol) is generally recommended for most patients. Your doctor may adjust this target based on your age and other health factors.

Fasting Blood Glucose

A normal fasting reading is between 4–6 mmol/L. For diabetics, we typically aim for 4–7 mmol/L before meals.

Blood Pressure

Diabetics are at higher cardiovascular risk, so we target a blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg — slightly lower than the general population.

Cholesterol

LDL (bad) cholesterol should be below 2.6 mmol/L for most diabetics, and below 1.8 mmol/L if you've had a heart attack or stroke.

Bring your home readings to every appointment. The more data we have, the better we can tailor your care.
