Patient Guide

Everything you need to know about your patient portal.

Getting started

How do I create an account?

Go to elmed.healthcare/register and fill in your name, email, and a password. You will get a verification email. Click the link in that email and you are in.

What is on my dashboard?

Your dashboard shows your upcoming consultations, recent prescriptions, any open orders, and new messages. It is your starting point for everything on ELMED.

How do I complete my health profile?

Go to My Profile in the sidebar. Fill in your ID number, date of birth, blood type, allergies, and chronic conditions. Doctors can see this before and during your consultation, which saves time.

Booking a consultation

How do I book a consultation?

Click Book Consultation in your dashboard or sidebar. You can search for a specific doctor or browse by specialty. Choose between a video call or in-person visit, pick a time slot, and confirm. You will get a confirmation email right away.

How do I join a video consultation?

When it is time for your appointment, go to My Consultations and click Join next to your booking. The video call opens directly in the browser, no app download needed.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes. Go to My Consultations, find the booking, and click Cancel. Contact the doctor through the messaging system if you need to reschedule.

Can I see a physiotherapist, chiropractor, or other allied / complementary health practitioner on ELMED?

Yes. ELMED now includes portals for allied health practitioners (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, speech therapists) and complementary medicine practitioners (homeopaths, chiropractors, naturopaths). Your GP can refer you directly through the platform, or you can book independently. Medical aid claims for these services are submitted automatically if your scheme covers them.

Prescriptions

Where do I find my prescriptions?

Go to My Prescriptions in the sidebar. All your current and past prescriptions are listed there. You can view the details, download a PDF, or send it to a pharmacy.

How do I set a preferred pharmacy?

Go to My Profile and look for the Preferred Pharmacy section. Search for your pharmacy and save. From that point, new prescriptions will automatically be sent to that pharmacy.

How do I request a refill?

Open the prescription and click Request Refill. The pharmacy receives your request and will let you know when it is ready.

Managing your family

How do I add a child or dependent?

Go to My Family in the sidebar and click Add Family Member. Fill in their name, date of birth, and relationship. Once added, you can book consultations and manage prescriptions on their behalf.

How do I book a consultation for a family member?

Click Book Consultation from your dashboard. At the top of the booking screen you will see a Who is this for? selector. Switch from yourself to the family member you want to book for. The consultation, prescription, and any claims will all be recorded under their health record, not yours.

How does the elder care feature work?

You can link your account to an elderly parent or family member who has their own ELMED account. Go to My Family, find them in the Adults section, and enter their email to send them an invite. They accept the invite and choose how much access to give you: Full access (see all their health info) or Limited access (see consultations and prescriptions only, no claims).

I am elderly and someone linked to my account. How do I manage that?

Go to My Caregivers in the sidebar. You will see everyone who has access to your account. You can change their access level at any time or disconnect them completely. You are always in control.

Medical aid and payments

How do I link my medical aid?

Go to My Profile and scroll to the Medical Aid section. Select your scheme, enter your membership number and plan, then save. ELMED will use this to submit claims automatically after consultations and prescriptions.

Where do I see my claims?

Go to My Claims in the sidebar. Each claim shows the date, amount, and current status. You can also download the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) PDF once a claim has been processed.

How do I pay an outstanding invoice?

Go to My Invoices and click Pay Now on any unpaid invoice. You can pay using PayFast, Yoco, or cash on delivery depending on what the provider accepts.

Are you also a healthcare professional?

I am a doctor or pharmacist. Can I use one account for both?

Yes. If you already have a patient account and want to join as a healthcare professional, you do not need a second account. ELMED links both roles to your existing login.

How do I register as a professional from my patient account?

Go to Profile in the sidebar and scroll to the bottom of the page. You will see a Register as a Healthcare Professional section. Click the button, choose your role, and complete your professional details. The ELMED admin team reviews and approves you, usually within 1 to 2 business days.

At the bottom of your Profile page

Are you a Healthcare Professional?

If you are also a doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional, you can register your professional profile. Once approved, you can switch between portals without a second account.

Register as a Healthcare Professional

Scroll to the bottom of Profile to find this.

What happens after I am approved?

Once approved, both portals are linked. Log in as normal and you will see a Switch to Patient View button in your professional portal's top menu. In the patient portal you will see a Switch back button. Your health records, family members, and prescriptions are all still there, nothing is lost.
